District Summary

The 42nd District is a diverse community stretching from Mission Viejo in the south to Chino in the north and west to La Habra. Approximately two thirds of the district is in Orange County with Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties contributing evenly to the final third. There is significant racial and ethnic diversity in the district with minority populations accounting for 45% of the general population.

A historically Republican District, the 42nd is trending Democratic. This year’s Presidential primary reflects this trend. While turnout for the primary was unusually high for both parties, Democratic primary voters in Orange County made up 46% of the primary votes cast. This was an increase of nearly 15% from the last contested race in the District. In San Bernardino County, 35,000 more voters participated in the Democratic Primary than did the Republican primary. In Los Angeles County, Democrats outnumbered Republicans more than two to one. It should also be noted that Democratic voter registration drives conducted in the district in preparation of this year’s primary are not reflected in the registration numbers. These newly registered voters will narrow the Republican advantage in registered voters significantly.
